The History of the Highlighter

The first highlighter was invented by Japanese inventor Yukio Horie in 1962. While it wasn’t made to highlight texts, it inspired Carter’s Ink Company to manufacturer a similar water based ink in 1963. In 1978, Dennison Company started making highlighters with fluorescent colours. In the 1980s, the felt of the tip was replaced with polyethylene beads moulded into porous heads. At first, highlighters weren’t widely embraced, which is why they were initially sold as highlighter and pen combinations. Today, highlighters can be found in almost every office workplace as an important tool for making information in documents stand out.
